NPMA Releases Its Fall & Winter Pest Forecast

October 08, 2024

Even though temperatures drop below freezing, ice builds up, and snow can pile up for a good chunk of the year, pests remain a year-round concern for Maine homeowners. That’s right—while fall and winter bring pumpkin-flavored treats and cozy sweaters, they also signal pests to take action to survive the colder months. Whether the cold sets in quickly or gradually, pests are on the move. With that in mind, let’s look at what the National Pest Management Association (NPMA) predicts for insect and rodent activity this fall and winter in Maine and throughout New England.

Expect rodent activity this fall and throughout the winter

As temps drop, homeowners in Lewiston, Auburn, and throughout Maine should expect a surge in rodent activity. Mice and rats are not exactly fans of inclement weather and will seek shelter indoors. They’re not just looking for warmth either; be prepared to find rodents or signs of rodents in the pantry and other areas where there are potential food sources. They’ll also be on the lookout for safe places to build nests and rear the next generation(s). Attics, closets, garages, and other relatively undisturbed areas are likely nesting spots.

Ticks are likely to remain active this fall

According to the NPMA’s experts, the Northeast is expected to see warm weather continue through the fall. While that is not bad news for most of us, it does mean an extended tick season. And really, that’s nothing new. Ticks often stick around until the ground freezes, making the final tick treatment essential. That is unless you like the idea of a robust tick population come spring.

Don’t be surprised to see other pests showing up

While the NPMA’s Fall and Winter 2024 Bug Barometer only mentioned a couple of pests, that doesn’t mean you won’t find other insects trying to get inside. Carpenter ants, ladybugs, spiders, and other crawling pests are just as apt to show up looking for a way in.

Prepare your home and yard to deter pest activity this fall

To get ahead of rodents and other pests, homeowners should take proactive measures to seal entry points and keep kitchens clean. Eliminating moisture sources to prevent pest infestations during the colder months is also a good idea.

Hauling away tree branches, pulling out rotting stumps, and removing other yard debris will also help with your pest prevention efforts; trimming back vegetation, storing firewood piles well away from the house, sealing outdoor trash cans, and cleaning out gutters will also make your yard less attractive to pests.

Is your home protected from insects and rodents?

As cooler weather sets in, insects and rodents become determined to move indoors, seeking warmth and food. Sealing entry points, keeping food stored securely, and eliminating moisture are essential steps in protecting your home, but they may not be enough to stop determined pests. That’s where professional pest control comes in. Local pest control experts can identify vulnerabilities, provide effective treatments, and offer ongoing protection against infestations.
