NPMA Releases New England Pest Predictions

April 09, 2025

With a warm, wet spring on the horizon, followed by a hot summer, pest activity in New England is expected to increase. According to the National Pest Management Association’s Bug Barometer®, due to rising temperatures, we're likely to see ticks, mosquitoes, and other pests emerging early this year. These pests thrive in damp conditions, which are abundant this season. This makes it the perfect time to get ahead of potential pest problems.

How does the weather impact pests?

A warm spring jumpstarts pest activity, as many bugs wake up from dormancy with the heat; the extra moisture from the damp weather also creates ideal environments for ticks and mosquitoes, which require humid areas for survival. As temperatures climb, pests like these will be even more active.

A hotter-than-usual summer also means an increase in wasp activity. Expect to see more wasp nests. The heat could also push pests indoors, so make sure your home is sealed tight to keep them out.

Simple pest prevention tips for Maine homeowners

Here are a few simple steps you can take to discourage pest activity in and around your home this spring:

  • Rake leaves, remove plant debris, cut grass, and trim landscape vegetation to reduce humid hiding places for ticks and other pests.
  • Cover trash cans with tight-fitting lids and remove trash weekly. Many pests, including wasps, are attracted to the scent of garbage.
  • Inspect your exterior and seal any cracks, gaps, and openings to create a physical barrier against pests.
  • Properly seal all of your doors and windows. Consider weatherstripping, door sweeps, and screens.
  • Cover vents with mesh screens that allow air to flow but won’t let bugs crawl in.
  • Trim tree branches away from your exterior to keep insects and rodents off your roof.
  • Keep your home clean and eliminate food debris that attracts pests.
  • Store food in the fridge or containers with lids.
  • Don’t leave dirty dishes in the sink or pet food on the floor for long.
  • Keep exterior lights off to reduce light as an attractant. Consider replacing white lights with yellow lighting. Insects can’t perceive yellow light and are therefore not attracted to it.

Steps like these will help to reduce the higher-than-normal pest pressures we’re likely to see this year.
